Apparently, a question often asked.
Personally, as an AM DRAM of Woodford Players and MADS, I have always known it as a theatre, along with its players, but it is so much more!
During the Second World War, a group of Air Raid Wardens responsible for the Brookdale Estate area wanted to form a club to improve the quality of life for local residents. In 1944, a private company limited by guarantee was formed. It was important to the founders that there was a clubhouse, so they leased 9 acres of grazing land from the local Council. The building, first opened in 1952, has been extended many times since.
From the first social event in 1943 to the present day, The Brookdale Club has provided its members with a warm and friendly environment and offered activities which have evolved over the years. The overriding ethos remains the same: to foster a community spirit for the benefit of residents of Bramhall and the District. This aim is achieved by offering social, educational and recreational activities to every club member.
Andante/Singing
They are a friendly mixed choir that meets every Wednesday evening from 7.30 to 9.00 pm to sing a wide range of songs, often in two/four-part harmony, including songs from ABBA, The Beatles, Elvis and The Carpenters, as well as songs from musicals and traditional songs. They put on three performances a year: a sing-along coffee morning in Spring, a Summer Charity Concert and a Winter Concert, as well as performing at the Christmas Fair and Open Days.
Art
Do you have a passion for painting? Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or you’re a seasoned professional looking for a vibrant community, get along and meet them!
26 years ago, what was a small trial has blossomed into one of the Brookdale Club’s most popular sections. There’s nothing formal; they collaborate to inspire, support, and learn from one another in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
The Book Club
There’s a unique kind of “wealth” found in a good book and a great conversation. One of the members put it perfectly: “I feel wealthy when I have been to our meeting because we discuss so many books to enrich my life.”
Whether you are a lifelong bibliophile or looking to get back into the habit of reading, the doors are wide open. They gather once a month to share books, explore new genres, and enjoy the company of fellow members.
Bowling
Whether you are a seasoned pro or have never held a bowl in your life, the Brookdale Bowling Section offers a warm, inclusive atmosphere for everyone. What began in 1974 has grown into a vibrant, year-round community where the social life is just as important as the game itself. Beyond the green, members enjoy a busy social calendar, including fun-themed bowling days, lively coffee mornings, and seasonal gatherings.
Bridge
There are Duplicate Bridge sessions on four days of the week. New members are very welcome, and Beginner and Improver sessions are held weekly.
Gardening
It became an official section of Brookdale in 1971. Having recently celebrated its Golden Anniversary, the organisation has a thriving community of over 100 passionate members.
This is a very active club within a club, with shows throughout the year, coffee mornings, garden outings, speakers and social evenings.
Pickleball & Table Tennis
Looking for a fun, fast-paced way to stay active? Come and play Pickleball at the Club; it’s a perfect environment to play, socialise, and improve your game. Then there’s good old-school Table Tennis; members are encouraged to play to their opponent’s level, ensuring everyone has a great game. If you’re new to the sport, don’t worry—there’s guidance to help you find your feet!
Rambling
Whether you prefer a brisk hike or something longer, the ramblers have the perfect pace for you. There are currently two events every month, some ending with a social bite to eat!
Line Dancing
Stay active, meet new friends, and find your rhythm! Whether you are a seasoned pro or have never tried a grapevine step in your life, you are more than welcome at Brookdale Line Dancing.
The Luncheon Club
