A Blue Plaque fixed to the frontage of Trinity House Dental Care commemorates this building as James Smithies’ home in Wilmslow. Smithies was born in Middleton, Manchester, where he first worked as a decorative painter and later as a decorative metalworker. He made various pieces for the Parish Church, including the Robert Catterall plaque, before moving the workshop to Wilmslow.

There are walks that simply get you from A to B, and then there are walks that feel like a privilege. The Rowarth Circular, a six-mile loop on the edge of the Peak District, is firmly in the latter camp. Winding through farmland, wooded valleys and high ground with far-reaching views, it showcases some of Derbyshire’s finest scenery in a surprisingly compact route.

Personally, as an AM DRAM of Woodford Players and MADS, I have always known it as a theatre, along with its players, but it is so much more!
During the Second World War, a group of Air Raid Wardens responsible for the Brookdale Estate area wanted to form a club to improve the quality of life for local residents. In 1944, a private company limited by guarantee was formed. It was important to the founders that there was a clubhouse, so they leased 9 acres of grazing land from the local Council. The building, first opened in 1952, has been extended many times since.
On the 22nd November 2024 we had an unexpected early snowfall during the night on top of icy conditions that resulted in me cancelling a photo-shoot. Having risen early I decided to walk to Poynton Pool with my camera as conditions everywhere were treacherous.
Well, needless to say I was greeted by an amazing sunrise and was the only person there to witness the spectacle. The image from that morning is the one shown above “Winter Sunrise Poynton Pool”.
Founded in 1924, the Wilmslow Green Room Society is one of the oldest Amateur Dramatic Societies in the UK. In the beginning, they were “strolling players” performing wherever a venue could be found. In 1989, after a massive fundraising effort, a Victorian cottage and an old shirt factory were converted into a modern theatre. After 65 years, the Society had its own home.
Before the Norman conquest in 1066, Bramall was held as two separate manors, owned by two Saxon freemen – Brun and Hacun. A few years later, William the Conqueror subdued the North West of England, and he gave both parts of the manor land to Hamon de Masci, the first Baron of Dunham Massey, who was one of his followers. The Bramall land was probably a waste, having been devastated during William the Conqueror’s harsh subjugation of the North West of England. During the next 800 years three families owned the estate: The Massey’s, the de Bromale’s and the Davenport’s.
