Founded in 1924, the Wilmslow Green Room Society is one of the oldest Amateur Dramatic Societies in the UK. In the beginning, they were “strolling players” performing wherever a venue could be found. In 1989, after a massive fundraising effort, a Victorian cottage and an old shirt factory were converted into a modern theatre. After 65 years, the Society had its own home.
The Green Room theatre has seating capacity for up to 102 and provides access and facilities for wheelchair users. Its programme of productions provides a varied and challenging season of plays, using innovative and adventurous stage designs, and is well supported by the good folk of Wilmslow. The Green Room were well known by the people of Macclesfield, as they performed Shakespeare’s plays for many years in the Gardens of Gawsworth Hall.
Amateur theatre offers a variety of challenges – not simply acting, but set design, scenery building, make-up, wardrobe, stage lighting and sound. You don’t have to be an expert, just come with enthusiasm and commitment and you’ll find a friendly welcome whatever your interest – and AGE IS NO BARRIER.
